This year is truly shaping up to be a treat for foodies, with its slew of gourmet festivals such as Savour Gourmet and World Gourmet Summit and, of course, the recent advent of the Michelin Guide Singapore. Next in line to whet Singaporeans’ appetites is the annual Epicurean Market, a three-day food and wine extravaganza organised by Marina Bay Sands and held at Sands Expo and Convention Centre.
The event’s attractions include celebrity chef demonstrations, culinary masterclasses and previews of new or soon-to-be-opened restaurants. To get you ready for the gastronomic adventure ahead, we have put together a guide to five highlights worth checking out. Time to leave your diet plans at the door.
Yardbird comes to town
Be among the first to try the mouthwatering Southern fare from Yardbird Southern Table & Bar, which opens at Marina Bay Sands next year. The restaurant operates two outlets in Miami and Las Vegas, and is famed for its crispy fried chicken, which is brined for 27 hours and is based on a secret family recipe.
The restaurant’s founder and CEO John Kunkel will be at Epicurean Market with his culinary team to personally serve the food. He will also conduct two cooking masterclasses on 12 and 14 August, 2016.
Flavours from the Venetian Macao
Also making their debut at the gourmet festival are North and Golden Peacock, both of which are located at the opulent Venetian Macao hotel in Macau. The former specialises in traditional food such as dumplings and noodles from the Dongbei and Sichuan regions of China, while the latter is a one-Michelin-starred eatery offering tempting Indian cuisine such as Jhinga Balchao (a spicy prawn dish) and Gosht Dum Biryani.
Learn from the culinary world’s best
Renowned chefs such as David Myers of Adrift, Tetsuya Wakuda of Waku Ghin and David Thompson of Long Chim will all be present to conduct cooking demonstrations and workshops. Thompson will offer tips on whipping up scrumptious Thai street food, while Wakuda (whose restaurant recently bagged a Michelin star) will demonstrate how to create easy yet tasty Japanese dishes.
After picking up some culinary skills, fill up on delectable cuisine served by celebrity chef restaurants the likes of Sky on 57, Bread Street Kitchen and Pizzeria Mozza. The tantalising offerings include foie gras on mantou, fish and chips and pizzette (a small pizza).
There will also be a “Mystery Box Battle”, where executive chef Jonathan Kinsella of db Bistro & Oyster Bar and CUT’s executive chef Joshua Brown will compete in cooking up sumptuous food using a basket of secret ingredients.
Get fresh at the Farmer’s Market
Stock up your larder with fresh, seasonal produce and gourmet products imported from Asia, Europe and North America. Highlights include red hued Sockeye salmon and juicy Campari tomatoes from the Okanagan Valley Market in British Columbia, as well as Ojai Pixie tangerines and Vidalia onions from the Los Angeles Specialty Market. Also available are peaches, gold and red beets, mini cucumbers and heirloom baby carrots.
The market also features pop-up stalls by Waku Ghin, CUT by Wolfgang Puck and db Bistro & Oyster Bar, selling black truffle salsa, premium meat cuts and house-made charcuterie respectively.
Guests can also look forward to baked goods and Ferber Jams (produced by patisserie Maison Ferber in Niedermorschwihr, France) from Epicerie Boulud, celebrity chef Daniel Boulud’s eat-in and take-out market in New York.
For those yearning for tipple, Australian winemaker Penfolds will conduct a five decade vertical tasting session and masterclass featuring its iconic The Penfolds Grange. Guests will get to sample vintages from 1978, 1988, 1999, 2004 and 2010 — some of which are particularly rare wines — and learn about the stories behind them.
The ticketed class takes place on 14 August, 2016 and is held by Penfolds winemaking ambassador Patrick Dowling. It is part of the Sands Signature Series of wine masterclasses, which is a newly introduced attraction to the Epicurean Market.
Epicurean Market 2016 takes place from 12 to 14 August, 2016.
