When master perfumer Yann Vasnier made a trip to the Charleston, he certainly had no expectations. However, his visit inspired him so much that he created The Bloomsbury Set for Jo Malone London.
The Charleston was lived in by a few creatives including artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, who moved to Sussex in 1916. The walls, doors and furniture were decorated with art inspired by Italian fresco painting and the Post-Impressionists. Outside, the walled garden featured a style reminiscent of southern Europe — think box hedges, mosaics, gravel pathways and ponds. Take a look at some photos of the Charleston here.

If you’ve had a look at photos of the Charleston, you’ll recognise the artwork of The Bloomsbury Set’s pretty box as the actual art in the house. By the end of his trip, Vasnier had made up a storyline of how he imagined the occupants’ lives had been. Drawing from that, he created five scents to represent different times of the day of living in the Charleston.
Described as the scent of dawn at the lily pond, the Garden Lilies scent comprises effervescent water lilies, dewy green sap, lush ylang ylang with white musk and a tinge of vanilla. On to the next scent, Tobacco & Mandarin includes vibrant mandarin, herbaceous sage, sweetened by including beeswax sweet pipe tobacco. For those who love whisky, there’s a scent just for you called Whisky & Cedarwood. It is a mysterious blend of fine whisky, opulent roses edged with spicy pimento, warm cedarwood and an interesting accord of waxy wooden floors.
Another truly unique scent is the Leather & Artemisia. Anise-tinged absinthe is blended with aromatic artemisia, soft orriswood and the rich scent of leather, enhanced by amber woody notes of Cypriol. To add a little vibrance to your day, take a whiff of the Blue Hyacinth. Intoxicating bold blue hyacinths are combined with garden geraniums and woody vetiver for a fragrance that’s characteristically refreshing.
Each 30ml bottle of scent is priced at RM230, and will be available from March 2017 onwards.
