Check in: Corinthia Hotel London

Housed in a building with over 125 years of history, and facing the equally historic view of the London waterfront, the Corinthia Hotel prides itself for offering an old world experience with all the modern comforts a worldly traveller could desire.

The hotel began life in 1885 as the Hotel Metropole before it became a government building in 1936 and used as Ministry of Defence offices. It re-opened its doors in 2008 as Corinthia Hotel London and since then, has continued to provide a special level of service for visitors to the city.

The hotel offers 294 guest rooms including 45 suites, some of which are two storeys and feature private lifts and terraces. Espa Life at Corinthia, the hotel’s famed spa, is known for its healing and wellbeing therapies and also houses the hotel’s underground pool. The hotel also plays home to the Lobby Lounge and its massive Full Moon chandelier created by Parisian designer Chafik Moon and produced by Baccarat, as well as modern Italian restaurant Massimo.

Located just five minutes from the Embankment Underground station, the hotel is a great place to explore London on foot, or jump on a train to venture further. Down the river stands Big Ben, with the London Eye across the river. Everything is in easy walking distance.

Because of the age of most of the buildings in the area, there is also a sense of old London when you walk down the streets by the river. It’s a reminder of how old the city is, even while monuments like the London Eye remind you that everything is firmly placed in the present.

The rooms at the Corinthia are some of the city’s biggest at an average of 45 square metres. They feature tall windows looking into the hotel’s courtyard or without and which give each room a grand feel.

We stayed in an Executive King Room with a bathroom that rivalled the size of the room itself. While the room is all dark and lush, the bathrooms are all white, elegant marble and well stocked with Espa amenities. The bathroom also features a large bathtub with TV screen and waterproof remote. Beyond the main bedroom, there is also a cloak room for luggage and outer garments.

Therapists are highly-trained and capable, walking you through the menu for what suits you best. After a long day of sightseeing and walking, the personalised massage is a soothing treat, with therapists focusing on problem areas after a clear and concise consultation.

A stay at the Corinthia Hotel London gives you a sense of what it must have been like to live in a London of yesteryear as one of the city’s upper elite. With an interior that has been painstakingly preserved yet still filled with modern-day comforts, the hotel has that well-balanced mix of old and new with just a touch of posh elitism.

The facilities, particularly the spa, almost make it a destination in itself and the rooms are luxuriously large, especially for London. With so many of the city’s most famous landmarks just a short jaunt away, it’s a great place to relax in, while still making the most of what lies beyond.
