Review: Poolside at Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur

One of our favourite things to do is to do absolutely nothing at a poolside. The idyllic feeling of relaxing time away stylishly while people-watching from behind our shades is something we’d be happy to do on a weekly basis. Extra points to being at a poolside include nibbling on yummy snacks and refreshing drinks, especially in our Malaysian weather, and that’s exactly what we did at Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur’s poolside restaurant called Poolside.

GHKL Poolside
Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur’s Poolside restaurant is on level two of the hotel.

Stroll leisurely through the hotel towards the pool, just to set your pace and mood for a relaxing meal to come. As you step into the restaurant area, soft, light-hearted music welcomes you together with greetings from the servers. Choose to sit at the dining tables, or if you’re going for a spa service at Essa Spa, you can also enjoy your meal at the poolside cabanas for more of a resort feel. In good weather, the breeze and general ambience of people being on holiday will set you in good spirits for sure.

GHKL beef
What’s better than a healthy steak dish by the poolside?

Our natural instinct is to indulge in less healthy but fun snacks like chips, nachos or pizza when chilling by a pool, but our bodies are thanking us for having chosen leaner and greener options. Instead, we savoured 160g of Grilled Black Angus beef steak with sweet potatoes, eggplant, zucchini and Chimichurri (RM105). The meat was tender and herby with a slight sourness from the Chimichurri, while the juice from the steak itself flavoured the grilled vegetables beautifully.

GHKL Asian cobb salad
A flavourful, Asian-style salad that will hit all the spots.

We also tried the Asian Cobb salad (RM42) that incorporates ginger-steamed chicken, cabbage, herbs and barley with a spicy seafood sauce for a protein-packed and incredibly flavourful dish. We like that it’s somewhat similar to eating chicken rice, but with barley instead of oily rice, so we feel better with ourselves. Calorie count aside, we enjoyed the nice mix of textures (especially the deep-fried wonton skins) and Asian flavours for a nice spin on a poolside salad. Just remember to add in the sauces a little at a time, because pouring the full amount might be a little too salty and overpowering.

Poolside has some really great options for snacking or dining, ranging from a full-fledge build-it-yourself burger with chips, to extremely healthy vegan power bowls with all the good stuff like sweet potatoes, beetroot, kale, chickpea, avocado, quinoa and soy bean sprouts, to give you an idea. The ambience is nice and relaxing, perfect for some drinks after work, or on a weekend with the family — with nice weather, of course.
